Philip's Trip to Palestine

Philip was in Malta during most of World War II. He had "vacations" such as they were in North Africa, visiting Alexandria and Cairo. He also had a one week furlough in Palestine in May 1943 which he blogged on a trusty (or was it rusty?) borrowed manual typewriter. At this time he was 31 years old.

Being a local (i.e. non-ordained) preacher in the Methodist Church this had obvious religious significance to him and he was very interested in visiting the biblical territory.

This letter was written on very thin paper so it could be air-mailed back home and was written immediately after the visit at the beginning of August 1943.

The Israeli-Palestinian "problem" was much the same as today - Jews wanted their homeland back because God had promised it to them - the Land flowing with milk and honey - and the local arabs who lived there wanted to stay on the land they had lived on for centuries. The Zionists had been trying to return to the Jewish homelands since before 1900. The Jews helped Britain during the first World War and as a result the British Government declared that Jews should be able to return. At the same time, the League of Nations which was dividing up the German possessions including palestine after the war gave the British a mandate to rule the area. The arabs were NOT happy with this and caused all sorts of trouble. In the second World War the Holocaust occurred and at the end the UN recommended that the area be divided into two states - Israel and Palestine. The British left and immediately the Jews took over the whole area.
